Eczema is a skin condition that can appear at any age. It consists of redness, itching, flaking and irritation. While many practitioners have tried to pin the causes of this condition, no studies are proven.
Eczema appears more commonly in people with a history of allergies or asthma. Depending on age, eczema tends to appear on different areas of the body. On infants, it can appear on the front on the arms and legs, the cheeks, and the scalp, while sparing the diaper area. As the person ages, it tends to appear on the back of the neck, elbow creases, and behind the knees. Even though these areas are more common, it can appear on all areas of the body.
Different factors can cause eczema to flair. Some of the most common reasons eczema flairs are as follows:
-
Harsh soaps
-
Cleaning products
-
Fragrances
-
Drastic change in weather
If you think you have eczema, visit your dermatologist. There are different treatment options for eczema, such as topic steroids to help decrease the itching, inflammation and redness. However, this option can just be thought of as a “band-aid” because it doesn’t cure the skin condition from eczema.
Some key things to remember if you have been diagnosed with eczema are:
-
Avoid harsh soaps
-
Try to use hypoallergenic soaps
-
Avoid long, hot showers to avoid drying the skin out
-
Try your best to avoid any foods you are allergic to
-
Avoid scratchy clothing, as it may irritate the skin more
